CK Construction, Inc. was incorporated in 2006 when David Kessinger, former Senior Project Manager of New Mexico and West Texas, and Rick Avila, former Project Engineer, broke away from Gilbane Building Co. after ten years of satellite operations in El Paso, Texas. Soon after, Alma Castillo joined the team, bringing her construction management experience from Clint ISD with her. The staff's background and thirty-plus years of general construction experience allow CK the unique ability to proactively identify and resolve potential complications, guaranteeing the highest quality end result.
CK’s business focus is medical and educational facilities. Although half of our work is generated through repeat clients, lump sum and hard bid work provide contemporary pricing to keep our estimating competitive in the El Paso market. Our strengths include on time, technically-savvy and high-quality deliveries to our clients. Many of our projects are for non-profit clients and typically include a combination of private and government funds. This aspect requires us to maintain tight cost controls, monitor progress, and conduct various accountability reports.
Our intent is to keep our personnel's professional needs met in order to maintain the level of excellence and expectation that has built our reputation. Common tools enlisted in every project include a working initial budget and cost-coded expense monitoring, detailed PERT progress schedules, and weekly project coordination meetings, all of which facilitate the exchange of information and encourage open communication.
We approach every job as a partnership between Contractor, Owner and Design team.
David Kessinger has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering, David started his career as Project Engineer/Superintendent for Afcon Construction. He was then brought on board KB Development as Project Manager and later worked for Robert E. McKee (Project Manager). In 1989, Gilbane Building Company hired David to manage and construct the Moody Gardens Convention Center, Equestrian Center, Inland Water Dock Facility and the 143-feet-tall glass Rainforest Pyramid and IMAX 3D Theatre in Galveston, Texas.
Recognition of David's excellent management skills came when he was assigned Project Manager to over 143 separate sites and forty-two simultaneous contracts in the City of Houston's "Parks to Standard" two-year program. His efficient formats for reporting and tracking information were honed in order to keep the City Engineer well informed for public and council inquires. David's hard work was acknowledged when Gilbane awarded his team the 2001 Southwest Region Iver Johnson Builder of the Year, an award given annually to one of Gilbane's project teams based on a number of criteria including quality, safety, client satisfaction, teamwork, MBE/WBE participation and reaching sustainability goals.
In 2001, Gilbane and ECM International came together in a joint venture, expanding Gilbane's market to Southwest Texas. David’s next assignment would take him to El Paso, Texas to assist in the completion and close-out of the El Paso Airport Expansion Project. However, as the nationwide recession loomed in early 2006, Gilbane pulled back to Houston, closing several markets in Texas, including El Paso. Instead of leaving with Gilbane, David opted to start his own business with Tom Cardenas, the former joint venture partner of Gilbane and owner of ECM International. Thus began CK Construction, Inc. The early focus for CK Construction was K-12 Education projects. Even though education continues to be a strong segment of work, CK has diversified into medical, medical services, retail, government, and light industrial applications.
Rick Avila has over 26 years of experience in the construction industry, having served as an architectural draftsman, planner, project engineer, project manager, and estimator. Rick began his career as an architectural draftsman for Ron harvey, Inc. in 1985, then in 1999 became Project Coordinator/Estimator for TYCO Engineering & Construction. It was at TYCO that Rick was able to expand his management skills internationally, traveling to various parts of Mexico to supervise project development and maintain schedule deadlines for several General Motors' 40-million dollar contracts. With his reputation preceding him, Rick was asked to join the project team at ECM International, where he became Project Engineer, Estimator, Supervisor, and Mechanical Quality Control.
In November of 2001, shortly after his initial employment with ECM, Houston-based Gilbane Building Company partnered with ECM International in the construction of several projects for the Socorro Independent School District in Socorro, Texas. Now working alongside Gilbane Project Manager David Kessinger, Rick assisted in the new construction of Sun Ridge Middle & Lujan Chavez Elementary School and the El Dorado High School design phase and construction. Business boomed for Gilbane Building Company until 2006, when the nationwide recession forced its El Paso branch to close.
In April of 2006, David Kessinger, having successfully worked on various projects with Rick, invited him to work as Project Estimator/Manager for his newly founded general contracting company CK Construction, Inc. Rick accepted, left Gilbane Building Company and relocated back to El Paso. Among some of Rick's first projects with CK Construction are estimating for the SISD transportation facility and the University of Texas at El Paso New Bookstore, Design Phase and Construction Documents. Since then, Rick has worked on a number of educational, medical, government, retail, and light industrial projects and continues to uphold CK's reputation of cost-effective, timely, and professional work.
Alma Castillo has over 15 years of experience in the construction industry, having worked numerous years in Construction Administration before joining the CK Construction, Inc. team. In 2005, Alma was the Owner Representative for a Clint Independent School District multi-phase project for which Gilbane Building Company was the contractor. It was through this contract that David Kessinger, Gilbane Senior Project Manager, and Alma Castillo first met.
When David started his own company in 2006, he was determined to bring Alma on board, as her knowledge of construction documents and her attention to detail provided a unique insight into articulating and meeting both the Owner and Contractor's expectations. In 2007, Alma accepted the position of Office Manager/ Assistant Project Manager. Since then, CK Construction, Inc. has had highly productive and accurate processing of engineering tasks such as submittal review, dissemination of information between field, office, Owner and design team, and fair and timely preparation of applications for payment. Alma Castillo became one of CK's most valued personnel and we look forward to her long term employment and development as her degree focus of Architectural Project Management aligns with the rest of the CK Construction Inc. team.
